I seem to have an old school game theme going on so I will just continue with the roll I’m on.
Diablo has been a favorite of many action RPG fans. Action RPG means an RPG that is played out in real time like an action game but still has statistics and a character to level up like a RPG. The original Diablo was released by Blizzard on January 2, 1997 for the PC. It was warmly received by critics and many fans were created. Critics praised the game for its gameplay, replayability, atmosphere, graphics, music, and variety of items, enemies, levels, and quests. The game had a supported multiplayer function which played the same as the single player mode but had more characters online at a single time allowing for teams of players and trading of items. The multiplayer function was highly praised. The main complaint with the game was the rather weak story that progresses despite the fact that RPG games typically have strong story-based features. The story revolves around the wars of heaven and hell. There exist seven Great Evils in hell, four lesser evils and 3 Prime evils. Diablo is a Prime evil and the Lord of Terror. The lesser evils war with the Prime evils and cast them from hell into the mortal world. Then, with the help of an arch angel a group of magi trap the Prime evils into ‘soulstones’, which are meant to contain them for eternity, and hide them throughout the world. Centuries later, mortals forget about the stones and they begin to weaken. Diablo can now use his powers even though he is still physically contained in his stone. He uses them to control an arch bishop in a nearby town. The bishop corrupts a king and kidnaps a prince for Diablo. The king falls to insanity and the town is shattered. Diablo then attempts to break out of his prison and take over the mortal world with his hordes of demons. This is where your character (who is unnamed throughout the game) comes in. There are no townspeople left and the only humans left are either there to fight or support the noble warriors. You fight through the catacombs under town and eventually defeat the Lord of Terror. In an attempt to imprison him again you push his soulstone into your own head. This works for now…
Diablo 2 was released June 29, 2000. The game featured enhanced graphics, worlds, items, and story. Diablo 2 consists of four ‘acts’ each with several quests to complete and a boss battle at the end. The gameplay is relatively the same as in the original. The main difference is that Diablo 2 was designed almost especially for the multiplayer aspect of the game (again almost the exact same as the single player portion) with character classes having attributes specifically designed to increase the power of groups. In 2001, an expansion pack was released named Lord of Destruction. The expansion pack added a fifth act to the game and added more character classes and items. The story of Diablo 2 follows shortly after the end of the original Diablo. The hero that imprisoned Diablo in his head cannot contain the demon and Diablo takes control. A wake of destruction follows the path where Diablo leads the hero (now named the wanderer). The wanderer releases the other two Prime evils from their soulstones and a fallen angel teaches them to corrupt the stones and make themselves more powerful. You are an adventurer looking for the source of the wrath. You start near the town from the original Diablo. In the first Act you save a failing sisterhood of warriors from one of the lesser evils. In Act II you follow the wanderer east and save another town and defeat another lesser evil of hell. By now you meet the arch angel who helped imprison the Prime evils many years ago. He tells you that you must slay the Prime evils. In Act III you finish by slaying Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred. Act IV is played out in Hell itself and climaxes as you slay Diablo, the Lord of Terror. The expansion pack’s Act V is played on a sacred mountain that has been conquered by Baal, the Lord of Destruction. The game ends after your character vanquishes Baal.
The Diablo series has done a lot to advance the video game industry. The series has many Game of the Year awards and has also received many other merits. There is also a lot of secrets, Easter eggs, and inside jokes that run through the series. The most notorious is the cow level. The cow level started in the original Diablo after rumors that after clicking on a cow in the game many, many times you will be transported to a secret level. The level never existed. However, in Diablo 2 if you combine the right in game items at the right time a portal will open to a ‘cow level.’ It consists of cows walking around carrying large weapons while making hilarious noises. Blizzard has included many ‘there is no cow level’ references in their games and also use the notorious cow-level cow in many jokes. There is second sequel in the series set to be released in 2009. Diablo 3 will follow the events roughly twenty years after the conclusion of Diablo 2. Expect it to follow the success of Diablo and Diablo 2.
