Tiger Woods 09

I will use my next post to be a complete hypocrite. I am going to review Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009.
During the break between my last post (where I belittled my roommate for playing) I played a round with him. It was amazing. Definitely, the best sports game I have ever played. Even though I am not a hardcore golf fan I thoroughly enjoyed playing. I do know the rules and everything but I have never really played golf whether in a game or in real life.
In Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009, you take the role of a PGA or LPGA golf professional and play a round of golf. You can also create your own character and play through a career on the tour. The controls are awesome with a near one-to-one scheme, where the thumb stick controls the backswing and follow-through. It also is how you control the power you put into your swing. This adds serious learning curve to the game. It also makes it more fun. Yes, you can still change the set-up to a three-click system, but who would want to.
When you create your own character you start by taking some practice shots. Then, the game judges how well your power, accuracy, short game and putting skills are and awards you stats for those skills. This means that instead of doing stupid, meanings less tasks like in other sports games to raise your stats they get better by you playing well. That is amazing. The point of the game is to become the best golfer in the tour. You do that by playing in the tournaments in career mode and winning them. There are also fun little challenges in the game that add some things to do. They are things like beat some pros in one-on-one matches. The pros start off weak and eventually progress to Tiger Woods. It gets really hard after a couple people.
There are some things that I do not like about the game though. I hate that after you hit the ball you can put spin on it. That is incredibly unrealistic. It is stupid because by changing to spin in mid-flight causes some very terrible bounces that go against all laws of physics. Also, the stats system sometimes punishes wrongly. I shot ten under par (which is incredible for anyone who doesn’t know how to play golf) and I still lost points in my putting skill. How stupid!
Overall the game is great though and anyone who enjoys golf or sports video games should play.
