The Grand Theft Auto series has been in and out of the news for years. We have all heard stories of children and teens who play the game committing violent acts and using drugs. Then, experts and parents say that the game caused the person to do the drugs and resort to violence. Thus, the game becomes very controversial even though there is a mature rating listed for the game. The game was never meant for an audience under seventeen years of age. Somehow that is about the only reason the game has been able to stay in the market.
To be honest I personally do not believe something as simple as a game can cause someone to act that way. Just stating my personal opinion, sorry if I offended anyone.
So why do people play games like Grand Theft Auto? Because they are extremely fun. How often should someone be able to steal a car, fly down the street going about one hundred miles per hour, and crash into a house with no consequences what so ever? Never in real life but, in a game this is hours of entertainment. Then, when can you become so wanted by the police that the government has to send in the army to contain you? Never in real life but, again in a game this is hours of entertainment. The joys in games like grand theft auto are that they allow you to do things that are so incredibly dangerous and against the law that any normal person would never come close to doing them. The acts are so ridiculous that even the most brutal scene can become funny in a morbid sort of way. Example… I was recently watching my friend play Grand Theft Auto 4. He was going full speed in a car until he lost control and crashed into the corner of a building. His character flew though the windshield and landed about forty feet away. Laughter ensued. Then, as his character (who miraculously survived) stands up, he is hit by a motorcycle. Hilarity ensued. We laughed for about five straight minutes about how crazy the events that just took place in the last fifteen seconds were. Now, if anyone on this planet saw something anything similar to an event like this take place in real life and laughed, they should be lynched. That fate should not be wished upon to any living creature. But a bunch of pixels on a screen, the scene should be flaunted and laughed at for days. The unreal aspect of the game is what makes it fun.

I totally agree with you that a video game can cause people to commit violent acts and use drugs. If anything, spending an immense amount of time playing these games could actually deffer those acts seeing as it would leave less time for them. Now I myself am not a gamer, but I do have a lot of friends who like to play so I end up being that person who has to suck it up and just watch.... for hours. GTA is by far one of the most popular games played by some of my best friends and I think you did a good job explaining why/how they are so much fun and so appealing to today's teenager. The non-realistic events mixed with the realistic graphics makes for that amazing rush without being in any real danger.
