To continue on with our "tour", if you will, I'd like to first recap a little to help show how the gaming world has advanced.
First, the original idea of a gaming system was created in 1967 with the "Brown Box". Next, in 1972 the Magnavox used the prototype of the "Brown Box" to create the Odyssey. In the mid 1970's Atari released Pong and a few years later released it's Atari 2600. At this point Atari was on top of the video gaming world. To start the 1980's, Intellivision was developed but the spotlight was soon stolen by a crash in the video gaming world. Five years later, in 1985, Nintendo came out with it's big hit gaming system called NES or Nintendo Entertainment System. This was the start of a whole new video gaming lifestyle.
Now to continue along with the Evolution of Video Gaming, Nintendo nearly took complete control of the video gaming world with it's release of the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989. This was the first major hand-held video gaming console created. The Game Boy used a directional pad and two corresponding buttons to do what the game want to do. There was an "A" button and a "B" button that each did something else in the game. The Game Boy also featured a black and white LCD screen. It's big hit game that put sales through the roof was Tetris. The Game Boy would later ultimately go through several "make overs" to stay up to date with the technology of today!
The first to try to compete with Nintendo was Sega. Sega released it's first gaming console in 1989 as well. This gaming system was known as the Sega Genesis. It's 16 bit technology was an advancement over the NES's 8 bit. Sega used a strong arcade library and had much popularity with the sport games released by Electronic Arts. EA (Electronic Arts) is currently the leader in video games that involve sports. Also, Nintendo did not release a 16 bit technology system for several more years and therefor the success of the Sega Genesis was very high. To top things off for the Sega Genesis, the release of a hit video game called Sonic the Hedgehog in 1992 made the system's popularity shoot to an all time high. This was one of the best video games of all time and Sega Genesis is where it originated. It took several years before it was created to play on any other gaming console and thus the success of the Sega Genesis was sky rocketing above the rest.
As you can see, with the release of the first hand held video gaming system and a new gaming console that used 16 bit technology, the late 1980's was very successful after the huge crash in the video gaming world. And finally there was competition in video gaming systems. From this point forward, no one was ever able to dominate video gaming! The 1990's was a whole nother story for video gaming advancements, so stayed tuned for Part 4 of The Evolution of Video Gaming!

YES! Sega Saturn… hours of memories on that one. I can remember playing Sonic for hours at my cousin’s house. Somehow I never beat the game even though I always got so close. Then, I would get mad and leave for an hour and go outside and play. Then, I would come back and give it another go, yet lose again. It was extremely frustrating but I could never quit. Darn you Sonic! I can also remember my dad’s Intellivision and NES. I played Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros., and Ninja Gaiden for hours when I could. Ah… the memories…
